Benches and Scoring Zone

The Detroit Red Wings Shoot twice on the side between sections 111 to 118. The Detroit Red Wings bench is in front of section 122, and the visitors bench is in front of section 121. The penalty box is in front of section 107 and 108.

Overview

Joe Louis Arena is located at 19 Steve Yzerman Drive in downtown Detroit Michigan. Named after the famous boxer and former heavy weight champion Joe Louis, the arena is the home to the NHL's Detroit Red Wings. Joe Louis Arena, along with Madison Square Garden and the Nassau Coliseum, are the only US arenas without corporate sponsorship names. Joe Louis arena opened in 1979 and has a capacity of 20,066 for the Red Wings, and 21,666 for concerts. The Red Wings will be relocating to a new arena in Downtown Detroit upon its completion, and the development of the new arena was approved in July of 2013.

Seat Numbers

The seat numbers in Joe Louis Arena follow a simple pattern; the lower seat numbers are next to the adjacent section with a lower section number. For example seat 1 in section 108 is on the aisle next to section 107, while seat number 15 will be on the aisle next to section 109. The same holds true for the 200s sections, seat number 1 in section 207 will be on the aisle next to section 206 and seat number 15 will be on the aisle next to section 208. Note a few rows only have 13 seats and the corner sections have up to 17 seats per a row.

Obstructed Views

Joe Louis Arena is known as one of the best venues to watch hockey, so even if you are in the 'nosebleeds', should still have a great seat. With that said, you want to avoid overpaying for low row numbers in the 100s sections in the corners. Seats in rows 3 to 6 in sections 103-104, 111-112, 117-118, and 125-126 will have thick bent glass that will make it difficult to see the plays on the far side, so if you are buying these tickets they should be at a cheaper price.

Best Seats

Some Detroit Red Wings fans say that section 109-209 or 120-220 are the best seats. We agree with 109 and 120, as you are on the side where the Red Wings shoot twice. But we believe row numbers are sometimes more important than the section number (in moderation). We suggest sitting in the 15th row of section 108 or 121 before sitting in the 5th row of section 109. That's because the height will give you better site lines and insure that you clear the annoyance that the glass can create as well as the standing fans in the first or second row.
