In addition to Jackie Robinson's #42, which is retired league-wide, the Phillies have retired the numbers of six of the best players in franchise history. Among them are Hall of Fame center fielder Richie Ashburn's #1, Hall of Fame right-handed starting pitcher Jim Bunning's #14, and former league MVP and three-time All-Star in Philly Dick Allen's #15. The franchise's bonafide best pitcher of all time, Hall of Fame lefty Steve Carlton, has his #32 retired, and their best position player, Mike Schmidt, the former three-time MVP and Hall of Famer, has his #20 retired in his honor. Another Hall of Fame starting pitcher, Robin Roberts, has his #36 retired.

Despite ramping up their team payroll in recent seasons, including what was at the time the largest contract ever given to a player in Bryce Harper's mega-deal, the Phillies still have fallen short of the playoffs for a long stretch. They certainly have the talent on their 2021 roster to compete for an NL East title or WiId Card berth at the least, with stars in the lineup like Harper, Rhys Hoskins, and J.T. Realmuto and a starting staff headed by guys like Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nola, who's one of the NL's best starters, period. If Philly's bullpen can hold up to the rigors of this season, we think the club can absolutely be among the major players in the National League this season.

The manager of the Philadelphia Phillies is Joe Girardi, who formerly managed the New York Yankees to a World Series victory over Philadelphia back in 2009. Girardi is entering his second season as Philly's skipper, and with a talented roster and big game experience throughout his managing career, this team is well-positioned to compete for the NL East title and more in 2021 and beyond.
