The Hawks’ early years were as an itinerant franchise in search of a permanent home. The team was founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons, before moving after 38 days to Moline, Illinois, where they became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1949, were renamed the Hawks, and would stay until 1955, when they departed for St. Louis. Led by future Hall of Famer Bob Pettit, the Hawks won an NBA title in the 1957-58 season defeating the Boston Celtics. The Hawks moved one last time, to Atlanta in 1968. Despite adding franchise icon Dominique Wilkins in 1982, Atlanta has mostly lived in the NBA’s middle class -- a regular playoff team with the occasional title challenge, such as the run to the Eastern Conference finals the Hawks made in the 2020-21 season.
