Atlanta Hawks Info

The Hawks’ early years were as an itinerant franchise in search of a permanent home. The team was founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bisons, before moving after 38 days to Moline, Illinois, where they became the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The franchise relocated to Milwaukee in 1949, were renamed the Hawks, and would stay until 1955, when they departed for St. Louis. Led by future Hall of Famer Bob Pettit, the Hawks won an NBA title in the 1957-58 season defeating the Boston Celtics. The Hawks moved one last time, to Atlanta in 1968. Despite adding franchise icon Dominique Wilkins in 1982, Atlanta has mostly lived in the NBA’s middle class -- a regular playoff team with the occasional title challenge, such as the run to the Eastern Conference finals the Hawks made in the 2020-21 season. The Hawks, then based in St. Louis, won their lone NBA championship in the 1957-58 season, defeating the Boston Celtics in the Finals. Four Hall of Fame players suited up for the Hawks that season, including legendary forward Bob Pettit. In Game 6 of the Finals, Pettit became the only player until Giannis Antetokounmpo did so in 2021 to score 50 points in a Finals-clinching game. It marked the last time until 1967 that the Celtics did not win the NBA title.

Who are the Atlanta Hawks’ Biggest Rivals?

The Hawks have a long-standing rivalry with the Boston Celtics dating back to the franchise’s days as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. The Celtics and Hawks have faced off four times in the NBA Finals, with Boston winning on three occasions. Big men Clint Capela and John Collins, wings Kevin Huerter, De’Andre Hunter, and Cam Reddish, and veterans Lou Williams, Danilo Gallinari, and Bogdan Bogdanovic make up a formidable rotation. Atlanta added to its depth with the addition of guard Delon Wright. While promising young center Onyeka Okongwu is sidelined with a shoulder injury, the Hawks drafted former Duke star Jalen Johnson in the first round of the NBA draft.
