The Nets were founded in 1967 as a charter member of the ABA as the New Jersey Americans. The franchise moved to Long Island in 1968 as the New York Nets, winning a pair of ABA championships, led by Julius Erving. After joining the NBA in 1976 following the ABA-NBA merger, the Nets returned to New Jersey in 1977, where they remained until moving to Brooklyn in 2012. The Nets largely struggled during their time in New Jersey, but led by stars such as Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson, Kenyon Martin, Kerry Kittles, and Keith Van Horn, the Nets appeared in consecutive NBA Finals in 2001-02 and 2002-03. After moving to Brooklyn in 2012, Brooklyn found initial success behind the quartet of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Deron Williams, and Joe Johnson.
