Who Are the Dallas Mavericks?

The Dallas Mavericks are a professional basketball team in the NBA's Southwest Division in the Western Conference. The Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion team in 1980, but got off to a rocky start when the first draft pick in franchise history refused to play for them. Dallas ultimately traded former UCLA star Kiki VanDeWeghe to the Denver Nuggets after he held out for the first month of the Mavericks' debut season. The trade turned out great for the Mavericks, who turned two future first-round picks, Rolando Blackman and Sam Perkins, into franchise staples. However, it took time for coach Dick Motta to get on the winning track. The Mavericks missed the playoffs in their first three seasons, including a 15-67 record in the inaugural campaign. Scoring machine Mark Aguirre helped Dallas to its first winning season in 1984. The Mavs' five-year playoff stretch culminated in a Western Conference finals berth in 1988. Motta leaned on All-Star center James Donaldson, Sixth Man of the Year Roy Tarpley, Aguirre, and Blackman in Dallas' second consecutive 50-win season. The Mavericks reached the doorstep of the NBA Finals before Hall of Famers Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy, and the rest of Los Angeles Lakers outlasted them in a classic seven-game series. Pat Riley's Showtime Lakers went on to win their second consecutive NBA title. The Mavericks went into a tailspin rather than build off the conference finals appearance. Dallas had seven different head coaches from 1989 to 2000. The Mavericks made the playoffs just once during the 12-year span despite drafting young stars Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson, and Jamal Mashburn in the 1990s. The franchise missed the playoffs for 10 consecutive seasons before new owner Mark Cuban turned everything around. Cuban's organization became filled with possibilities. Future Hall of Famers Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash teamed with All-Star Michael Finley to take the Mavericks back to the playoffs in 2001. Although the Mavs lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round, there was hope that the star trio would ultimately bring the franchise its first championship sooner rather than later. Nash's departure via free agency after the 2003-04 season prompted the Mavericks' braintrust to re-shape the team to bolster their defense. Nowitzki was the unquestioned centerpiece who quickly emerged as one of the biggest NBA stars. Nowitzki led the Mavs to the postseason in Avery Johnson's first year at the helm. The Mavs outlasted the reigning champion San Antonio Spurs in a seven-game thriller in the Western Conference semifinals before foiling Steve Nash's Phoenix Suns to advance to the first NBA Finals in franchise history. It would be a memorable Finals for all the wrong reasons. The Mavericks became just the third team in league history to lose an NBA Finals after taking a 2-0 lead. To make matters worse, the Mavs blew a 13-point lead midway through the fourth quarter of Game 3. Dwyane Wade and Shaquille O'Neal ultimately hoisted the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, while Nowitzki & Co. lamented what could have been. The Mavs had a string of early-round playoff exits before finally reaching the mountaintop in 2011. Nowitzki upset the heavily favored Miami Heat led by the Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh to win the franchise's first and only NBA Finals. Veteran Jason Terry was electrifying off the bench in the series, but Nowitzki's play earned him NBA Finals MVP honors. The Mavericks failed to win a playoff series after Nowitzki's heroics against the Heat. Dallas missed the playoffs in four of the next 10 seasons, but there's plenty of optimism that young superstar Luka Doncic — one of the NBA's most prolific scorers — can take the Mavericks back to the Promised Land.

Dallas Mavericks Schedule for 2021/2022

The Dallas Mavericks — coming off a second consecutive first-round playoff loss to the Los Angeles Clippers — have plenty of reasons to believe that Luka Doncic will take them back to the postseason. Doncic is considered the odds-on favorite to win the NBA MVP in his fourth season. Doncic's ability to score from anywhere on the court and get his shot off virtually any time he pleases instantly makes the Mavericks a true threat. New general manager Nico Harrison and head coach Jason Kidd didn't make massive changes in the offseason other than to jettison Josh Richardson, who disappointed last season. The Mavs added rebounder Moses Brown, “three-and-d” swingman Reggie Bullock, and Sterling Brown, who shot 42% from three-point range last season, to give Doncic more help.
