A charter member of the ABA, the Nuggets were founded as the Denver Larks, but the team changed their name to the Denver Rockets prior to their inaugural season in 1967-68. The franchise became the Nuggets in 1974, and joined the NBA in 1976 after the ABA-NBA merger. Denver had periods of sustained success in the 1980s (with such stars as Alex English, Kiki Vandeweghe, and Dan Issel) and early 1990s (led by Dikembe Mutombo, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Antonio McDyess). The team’s fortunes changed with the addition of Carmelo Anthony in 2003 and a rotating supporting cast that featured Allen Iverson, Marcus Camby, J.R. Smith, Nene, and Chauncey Billups. The Nuggets were regular contenders in the West until Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks in 2011. Denver found recent success after drafting and building around current NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.
