Golden State Warriors Info

The Warriors began play in 1946 in Philadelphia as a charter member of the Basketball Association of America, the precursor to the NBA. Led by early stars Joe Fulks, Paul Arizin, Tom Gola and Neil Johnston, the Warriors won titles in 1946-47 and 1955-56. The team later added Wilt Chamberlain and Nate Thurmond, moved to San Francisco in 1962 (and Oakland in 1971), but were unable to win a championship with the Hall of Fame duo. Led by Rick Barry and Jamaal Wilkes, the Warriors won the 1974-75 NBA title. After a downturn, the Warriors had a late 1980s resurgence behind the “Run TMC” trio of Tim Hardaway, Mitch Richmond, and Chris Mullin. The team went through an extended period of struggles with only sporadic success, even with such stars as Chris Webber, Latrell Sprewell, Gilbert Arenas, Jason Richardson, Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, and Antawn Jamison. The arrival of Steph Curry (and later Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Kevin Durant) would result in three NBA championships in 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2017-18. How Many Championships Have the Golden State Warriors Won?

The Warriors have won six NBA championships, including two titles as the Philadelphia Warriors. The first championship came in 1946-47 over the Chicago Stags in the inaugural season of the Basketball Association of America, which would be rebranded as the NBA after the BAA-NBL merger in 1949. The last Warriors title in Philadelphia came in 1955-56, defeating the Fort Wayne Pistons in the Finals. As the Golden State Warriors, the team won the 1974-75 title in what many consider the biggest Finals upset in league history, defeating the heavily-favored Washington Bullets. More recently, led by the quartet of Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, the Warriors won three titles -- 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2017-18 (all over the Cleveland Cavaliers) -- and played in five consecutive Finals.

Who are the Golden State Warriors’ Biggest Rivals?

One of the NBA’s oldest franchises, the Warriors have had numerous rivalries. More recently, that has meant the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers, who the Warriors met in four consecutive NBA Finals, winning titles in the 2014-15, 2016-17, and 2017-18 seasons, but losing in 2015-2016, the season in which the Warriors set a regular-season record for wins (73-9). Golden State also had playoff tussles with the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Oklahoma City Thunder during that run. The Warriors also have met the Los Angeles Lakers numerous times in the playoffs over the decades, and with the Boston Celtics when the team was located in Philadelphia.

Who is on the Golden State Warriors Roster in 2021-22?

As has been the case for more than a decade, the Warriors will be led by former NBA MVP Steph Curry, who is coming off a season in which he led the league in scoring. Golden State suffered a blow with the news that star guard Klay Thompson, who has missed the past two seasons with injuries, would not be available until later in the season. The Warriors do return the third member of their star trio, Draymond Green, who will again anchor the defense. Wing Andrew Wiggins had a strong season in 2020-21, and the Warriors hope he can fill Thompson’s void. The rest of the supporting cast is a mix of youth and veterans. Guard Jordan Poole looks to make another leap, while the team hopes the last year’s top draft pick, center James Wiseman, and 2021 first-round picks Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody can contribute immediately. Veteran Andre Iguodala returns for his second stint with the team, while Kevon Looney, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Otto Porter, and Nemanja Bjelica will look to provide depth.

Who is the Head Coach for the Golden State Warriors?

Steve Kerr is entering his eighth season as head coach of the Warriors. Kerr, who won five NBA championships as a player (three with the Chicago Bulls and two with the San Antonio Spurs), has guided the Warriors to three NBA titles and appeared in the Finals in each of his first five seasons as a coach.
