The Bucks joined the NBA in 1968 as an expansion team. Their fortunes quickly changed when they drafted Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar), who would help the franchise win their first NBA title in 1971. Milwaukee spent the 1980s as perennial contenders in the Eastern Conference, led by stars Sidney Moncrief, Marques Johnson, Paul Pressey, Ricky Pierce, and Terry Cummings. The Bucks struggled for much of the 1990s, before the arrival of the “big three” of Ray Allen, Sam Cassell, and Glenn Robinson and head coach George Karl changed their fortunes. Following the breakup of that team, the franchise struggled through years of losing and mediocrity. The Bucks climbed to their second championship in 2021 after building around Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA MVP who the team drafted in 2013.
