The 76ers were founded as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946-47, and began play in the National Basketball League. The Nationals were one of seven NBL teams to join the newly-formed NBA after the BAA-NBL merger in 1949. After a successful run in Syracuse that saw the franchise win an NBA championship and appear in three NBA Finals, the team relocated to Philadelphia in 1963. Despite some down periods (including the ignominious 1972-73 team that finished 9-73, a record that still stands, as well as the wilderness years of the “The Process”), the 76ers have mostly been a successful franchise since their founding. Numerous legendary and Hall of Fame players have played for the franchise: Dolph Schayes, Hal Greer, Wilt Chamberlain, Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala, and Joel Embiid.
