Philadelphia 76ers Info

The 76ers were founded as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946-47, and began play in the National Basketball League. The Nationals were one of seven NBL teams to join the newly-formed NBA after the BAA-NBL merger in 1949. After a successful run in Syracuse that saw the franchise win an NBA championship and appear in three NBA Finals, the team relocated to Philadelphia in 1963. Despite some down periods (including the ignominious 1972-73 team that finished 9-73, a record that still stands, as well as the wilderness years of the “The Process”), the 76ers have mostly been a successful franchise since their founding. Numerous legendary and Hall of Fame players have played for the franchise: Dolph Schayes, Hal Greer, Wilt Chamberlain, Chet Walker, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, Maurice Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, Andrew Toney, Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala, and Joel Embiid. How Many Championships Have the Philadelphia 76ers Won?

The Sixers have won three NBA championships. The franchise’s first title came when they were known as the Syracuse Nationals, defeating the Fort Wayne Pistons in the 1954-55 season. After moving to Philadelphia, the 76ers won championships in 1966-67 (beating the San Francisco Warriors) and 1982-83 (over the Los Angeles Lakers). The Sixers have also appeared in six other Finals, twice as the Syracuse Nationals (losing to the Minneapolis Lakers in 1949-50 and 1953-54) and four times in Philadelphia (losing to the Portland Trail Blazers in 1976-77 and the Lakers in 1979-80, 1981-82, and 2000-01).

Who are the Philadelphia 76ers’ Biggest Rivals?

The Sixers’ traditional rivals are the Boston Celtics. Philadelphia and Boston have met 21 times in the playoffs, dating back to the franchise’s origins as the Syracuse Nationals, with a trip to the NBA Finals on the line on 13 of those occasions. The Sixers also have a rivalry with the New York Knicks and the Philadelphia Warriors, whom they faced 10 times in the playoffs prior to the Warriors’ move to the West Coast. The Sixers also met the Los Angeles Lakers (twice while the Lakers were based in Minneapolis) in six Finals, winning the 1982-83 NBA championship.

Who is on the Philadelphia 76ers Roster in 2021-22?

The biggest question surrounding the Sixers this season is the future of All-Star forward Ben Simmons, who has requested a trade. What Philadelphia does in regards to Simmons will shape how their season plays out. Even if Simmons stays, the Sixers are built around All-NBA center Joel Embiid. Philadelphia will look to Tobias Harris to lighten Embiid’s offensive load, while second-year guard Tyrese Maxey looks to make a leap. Matisse Thybulle (one of the league’s best perimeter defenders), Danny Green, Seth Curry, and Shake Milton will be the main perimeter options. Furkan Korkmaz, Georges Niang, and Andre Drummond add additional depth.

Who is the Head Coach for the Philadelphia 76ers?

Former NBA Coach of the Year Doc Rivers, who won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 2007-08, enters his second season as the coach of the 76ers.
