The Jazz were founded in New Orleans as an expansion team that began play in the 1974-75 season. The team traded for Pete Maravich, who was a college star at nearby LSU. Despite Maravich’s presence, the franchise struggled on the court and with financial issues off it. The team moved to Salt Lake City prior to the 1979-80 season, and after some initial struggles, the Jazz would eventually become one of the NBA’s most successful franchises. Early stars Adrian Dantley, Darrell Griffith, and Mark Eaton laid a foundation that Karl Malone and John Stockton built upon. The Malone-Stockton partnership (along with head coach Jerry Sloan) was one of the most successful in league history, with the Jazz making the playoffs every season the duo played together, appearing in two NBA Finals and five Western Conference finals. Utah has rebooted since then with the Deron Williams-Carlos Boozer era to Gordon Hayward to the current star duo of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert.
