Calgary will be looking for increased offense from its top forwards: Johnny Gaudreau (last season’s leading scorer), Matthew Tkachuk, and Sean Monahan. The Flames hope Juuso Valimaki can step up after losing defenseman Mark Giordano, a former Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defensive player, to the Seattle Kraken. Noah Hanifin, Christopher Tanev, and Rasmus Andersson will also look to make up for the loss of Giordano. Forward Blake Coleman, who helped the Tampa Bay Lightning win the Stanley Cup, is a key free-agent addition, while left wing Jakob Pelletier could be primed for a breakout season.

The Calgary Flames have won one Stanley Cup, defeating the Montreal Canadiens in the 1988-89 season. The Flames have also appeared in two other Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Canadiens in 1985-86 and the Tampa Bay Lightning 2003-04.

The Flames’ primary rivals are their provincial brethren, the Edmonton Oilers which is known as the “Battle of Alberta.” Calgary also has rivalries with the other franchises based in Western Canada, the Vancouver Canucks and the Winnipeg Jets.

Darryl Sutter enters the second season of his second tenure as Flames’ head coach, after replacing Geoff Ward, who was fired midseason. Sutter, who led the Los Angeles Kings to two Stanley Cups, took the Flames to the Stanley Cup Finals (in 2003-04) in his previous stint with Calgary.
