Los Angeles Kings Game Schedule for NHL Season Info

The Staples Center will welcome the NHL's biggest stars this season, with the Los Angeles Kings looking to make it to the playoffs once again. We'll take a closer look at the key matchups on the Los Angeles Kings' 2021-2022 regular season schedule.

Who Are the Los Angeles Kings?

The Los Angeles Kings are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Pacific Division in the Western Conference. The Kings joined the NHL as part of the six-team expansion in 1967. Although the Kings had solid regular seasons in the 1970s and early 1980s, they routinely disappointed in the playoffs. The Kings' Triple Crown Line led by future Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne provided some memorable moments, but they were never able to reach the mountaintop. The franchise made a seismic move acquiring mega-star Wayne Gretzky in a blockbuster trade with the Edmonton Oilers in 1988. The Great One lifted the Kings to their first Stanley Cup Final appearance in 1993. The Kings lost three overtime games to the eventual champion Montreal Canadiens, but there was hope in Southern California that the Kings could be perennial Stanley Cup contenders. However, the Kings missed the playoffs for the next four seasons. It would take another decade before L.A. became champions. The franchise finally broke through in style in 2012. Coach Darryl Sutter's club leaned on goaltender Jonathan Quick to become the first No. 8 seed in North American professional sports history to win a championship. The Kings beat the New Jersey Devils to hoist their first Stanley Cup. Sutter & Co. won their second Stanley Cup in three seasons in 2014, but the Kings couldn't sustain that level of success. Los Angeles missed the playoffs in five of the next seven seasons.

Los Angeles Kings Schedule

The Los Angeles Kings might be poised to return to the playoffs after a three-year drought if their boatload of blue-chip prospects takes a leap forward. It's not a pipe dream in the weak Pacific Division that now includes the Seattle Krakens. General manager Rob Blake added some quality veteran pieces in free agency this offseason to help a group of young players who should make up the nucleus of the team for years to come.Todd McLellan's team hopes to snap out of a three-season playoff funk with a blend of veterans and up-and-comers. The Kings — coming off a sixth-place finish in the division in the regular season — traded for Nashville Predators' standout Viktor Arvidsson and signed Philip Danault to speed up the organizational rebuild. Offensive leader Anze Kopitar (who led the team in scoring last season), Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown, and goalie Jonathan Quick are other key veteran pieces of the puzzle. Los Angeles has also piled up some promising young talent in the past few years, including center Quinton Byfield, the second overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, and defenseman Brandt Clarke, who was taken with the eighth selection in the 2021 NHL Draft. Young players like Gabriel Vilardi and Alex Turcotte also have the potential to contribute. The Kings will play seven of their first 11 games at the Staples Center. They'll also have a pair of seven-game homestands before the All-Star break. McLellan's club won't have to pack their bags from Nov. 17 to Dec. 2 and Dec. 28 to Jan. 13. They'll turn into road warriors during a season-long eight-game stretch before and after the All-Star and Olympics breaks. The Kings will embark on an East Coast swing to face the New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Detroit Red Wings from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2, 2022. They'll then travel to Arizona and Anaheim after the Olympics break. The NHL's All-Star break from Feb. 3 to 6, 2022, will be followed by a two-week hiatus (Feb. 7 to 22) to allow NHL players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The NHL and NHLPA have the autonomy to prevent their players from going to Beijing if there are increased COVID-19 or player safety concerns at the time of the Games. The league will have an alternate schedule if players don't participate in the Olympics. The Kings might sneak up on teams with their revamped roster.
