Minnesota Wild Game Schedule for NHL Season Info

What's in store for the Minnesota Wild this season? Maybe a Stanley Cup championship? Time will only tell. Here's a closer look at the Minnesota Wild's complete schedule with intriguing storylines and matchups.

Who Are the Minnesota Wild?

The Minnesota Wild are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Central Division in the Western Conference. The Wild began play in 2000 and became the first team in Minnesota since the Minnesota North Stars relocated to Dallas in 1993. The NHL granted another franchise to Minnesota in 1997 after local politicians were unsuccessful in their bid to lure the original Winnipeg Jets and fill the void left by the North Stars' departure. The Wild made the playoffs in 11 of their first 21 seasons, including a spirited run to the Western Conference Finals in their third season. However, the franchise hasn't been able to break through for the better part of two decades. The Wild missed the playoffs in six of the eight seasons following that deep postseason run. Minnesota advanced past the first round of the playoffs only twice from 2003 to 2021. However, the Wild didn't win a playoff series from 2016 to 2021. The franchise is still searching for its first Stanley Cup.

Minnesota Wild Schedule

The Minnesota Wild's surprising playoff appearance last season prompted plenty of questions about whether this was the start of something special or just a fluke. Head coach Dean Evason's first full season at the helm produced an impressive third-place finish in the West Division. Although the Wild's magical ride ended in a seven-game heartbreaker to the Vegas Golden Knights in the first round of the playoffs, there's optimism that they can build off their success after a flurry of moves this offseason. The Wild might not be true Stanley Cup contenders, but they could make a deeper run in the postseason thanks to some shrewd moves by general manager Bill Guerin this summer. The organization surprisingly bought out Ryan Suter's and Zach Parise's contracts. Carson Soucy left after being plucked by the Seattle Kraken in the expansion draft. The Wild did lock up young superstar Kirill Kaprizov — who led all rookies in goals and points en route to the Calder Memorial Trophy — to a monster five-year contract before the start of training camp. Marco Rossi (who dealt with COVID-19 issues last season), Matt Boldy, and Joel Eriksson Ek could provide jolts in 2021-2022. Captain Jared Spurgeon will also be a factor as a defenseman. It will be challenging for the Wild to lead the NHL in even-strength shooting percentage for a second consecutive season, but there are enough weapons to make this a formidable group. Minnesota will play just three games at the Xcel Energy Center in October before playing 25 home games in 2022. The Wild will play the St. Louis Blues on New Year's Day in the 2022 NHL Winter Classic at Target Field. An outdoor rink will be set up at the home of Major League Baseball's Minnesota Twins. Evason's team will spend most of March at home with a season-high nine-game stretch at the Xcel Energy Center in the final two weeks of the month. The Wild will also have a five-game homestand from Nov. 26 to Dec. 4 against the Winnipeg Jets, Tampa Bay Lightning, Arizona Coyotes, New Jersey Devils, and Toronto Maple Leafs. They'll follow up that stretch with a four-game road trip to Edmonton, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas from Dec. 7 to 12. The Wild's season-high five-game road trip will begin before the NHL All-Star Break and end after the two-week Winter Olympics hiatus. Minnesota will visit the New York Rangers, New York Islanders, and Chicago Blackhawks from Jan. 28 to Feb. 2 before the NHL All-Star Break (Feb. 3-6). The NHL will stop play from Feb. 7 to 22 to allow players to participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. However, the NHL, and NHLPA reserve the right to prevent their players from taking part in the Winter Games if there are heightened COVID-19 or player safety concerns at the time. If players don't go to Beijing, the NHL will have an altered schedule for the remainder of the regular season. The Wild will conclude their five-game road trip in Toronto (Feb. 24) and Calgary (Feb. 26). Minnesota will play five of its last six regular-season games at the Xcel Energy Center.
