New York Islanders Game Schedule for NHL Season Info

The New York Islanders will play in the state-of-the-art UBS Arena as true Stanley Cup contenders. Let's take a closer look at all the interesting matchups on the New York Islanders' regular season schedule.

Who Are the New York Islanders?

The New York Islanders are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The franchise enjoyed a wealth of success after joining the NHL in 1972. The Islanders made the playoffs for 14 consecutive seasons beginning in 1975. Head coach Al Arbour leaned on future Hall of Famers Mike Bossy, Bryan Trottier, Billy Smith, Denis Potvin, and Clark Gillies to win four consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983. The Isles ruled the NHL landscape for the first half of the 1980s before giving way to another dynasty. The Islanders went to a fifth consecutive Stanley Cup Final but were dominated by the Wayne Gretzky-led Edmonton Oilers in 1984. The Islanders are the last American major professional sports franchise to win four consecutive championships. The Isles, however, fell on hard times after that dominant run and failed to win a playoff series for 22 consecutive years. Ownership, management, and financial issues prompted the franchise to move from the aging Nassau Coliseum in Long Island to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn after the 2014-2015 season. The Isles divided their home games in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons between the Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum before building the state-of-the-art UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

New York Islanders Schedule

The New York Islanders might be the biggest threat to dethrone the reigning two-time Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning. Hall of Fame general manager Lou Lamoriello returns a solid core that pushed Tampa Bay to the limit in the NHL semi-finals in each of the past two seasons. Lamoriello, the architect of the three Stanley Cup winning teams with the New Jersey Devils, has assembled a formidable club built on sterling goal-tending and hard-nosed defense. The Islanders boast arguably the best 1-2 goalie tandem in the NHL with Semyon Varlamov, who finished fifth in the Vezina Trophy voting last season, and promising youngster Ilya Sorokin. The Isles lost Jordan Eberle and Nick Leddy in the offseason, but captain Anders Lee, Casey Cizikas, Kyle Palmieri, Anthony Beauvillier, up-and-coming Oliver Wahlstrom, and new addition Zack Parise form a quality nucleus. The Islanders extended the Lightning to seven games in a classic semi-final series last season, but there are concerns about whether they'll have enough consistent fire-power after finishing 21st in scoring (2.71 goals per game) last season. If their offense improves even slightly, they could be serious Stanley Cup threats again. The Islanders' 2021-2022 season promises to be a memorable one with the opening of the UBS Arena. Barry Trotz's club will open the season with a franchise-record 13-game road trip to start the regular season while they put the finishing touches on the new building. The 13-game road trip that stretches for more than a month will have a pair of breaks to make life easier for the team. The Islanders will visit the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Arizona Coyotes, and the Vegas Golden Knights before a five-day rest from Oct. 25 to 29. Trotz's team will then travel to Nashville on Oct. 30 before a three-day break. The Isles will play six more games on the road at Montreal, Winnipeg, Minnesota, New Jersey, Tampa Bay, and Florida before playing at the UBS Arena against the Calgary Flames on Nov. 20. The Islanders will also have a seven-game road trip from Apr. 1 to 15. On the flip side, the Isles will have a season-long six-game homestand from March 3 to 13. They'll also have a pair of five- and four-game homestands. The NHL will take a break from Feb. 7 to 22 for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. The NHL and NHLPA, however, reserve the right to prevent their players from participating in the Winter Games if there are increased concerns about COVID-19 or player safety at the time. If players don't go to Beijing, the NHL will have an alternate schedule without the two-week break. The Islanders are poised to make a true run to the Stanley Cup Final this season.
