The Islanders’ four Stanley Cups came in a dynastic run between 1980 and 1983. That dominant run was the last time any team in a major professional North American sports league has won four consecutive championships. That run began in the 1979-80 season, when the Isles defeated the Philadelphia Flyers. In the 1980-81 Finals, the Islanders downed the Minnesota North Stars. The Isles swept the Vancouver Canucks in the 1981-82 season and the Edmonton Oilers in 1982-83. The Oilers ended the Isles’ “Drive for Five” in the 1983-84 Finals, winning 4-1 to end the dynasty.

Based on playoff matchups, the Islanders have a strong rivalry with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Isles also have regional rivalries with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Washington Capitals. More recently, the Islanders have had playoff clashes with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Islanders lost a heartbreaking seven-game series to the Tampa Bay Lightning in last season’s playoff semifinals. The Isles hope to take another step forward this season, and will be bolstered by a healthy Anders Lee alongside center Mathew Barzal and a full season of Kyle Palmieri. Semyon Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin are a sound goaltending duo, while the Isles are hopeful of breakthrough seasons from Oliver Wahlstrom and Otto Koivula. The Islanders will also look for experience and depth from free-agent signings Zach Parise and Zdeno Chara.

Veteran coach Barry Trotz enters his fourth season as Islanders’ head coach. Trotz, who led the Washington Capitals to the 2017-18 Stanley Cup, is third all-time in NHL coaching wins.
