We'll take a closer look at all the intriguing storylines and matchups on the Philadelphia Flyers' regular season schedule.

Who Are the Philadelphia Flyers?

The Philadelphia Flyers are a professional hockey team in the NHL's Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference. The Flyers, who entered the NHL as part of the 1967 expansion, became the first expansion club to win the Stanley Cup. Philly reached the mountaintop with back-to-back championships in 1973-74 and 1974-75. The Flyers earned “The Broad Street Bullies” moniker for their intimidating and bruising style in the mid-70s. Philly made it to a third consecutive Stanley Cup Final before losing to the upstart Montreal Canadiens in 1976. Then, the Flyers made a fourth trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 1980 but couldn't fend off the New York Islanders. The Flyers would have likely hoisted another championship banner if not for the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980s. Philly infused its roster with young talent like Pelle Lindbergh, Brian Propp, Tim Kerr, Dave Poulin, and Mark Howe to make a championship run, but lost two Stanley Cup finals to Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and the rest of the juggernaut Oilers. It would take another decade before star Eric Lindross and his Legion of Doom Line would lead the Flyers back to the Stanley Cup Final. Philly had plenty of firepower but was swept by the Detroit Red Wings in 1997. The Flyers lost their sixth Stanley Cup Final when the Chicago Blackhawks toppled them in 2010. The Flyers alternated seasons of missing the playoffs and exiting in the first round from 2013 to 2019.

Philadelphia Flyers Schedule

The Flyers failed to make the playoffs after an encouraging run to the second round of the playoffs in the bubble in 2020. Philly hopes to return to the postseason after a flurry of offseason moves that remade their defense. Standouts Claude Giroux, Kevin Hayes, and Ivan Provorov still are the headliners for Alain Vigneault's team, but there are plenty of questions for a franchise that has advanced past the first round of the playoffs just once in the past nine seasons. Did general manager Chuck Fletcher sacrifice too much young talent and draft capital to create a new defense? Have the Flyers done enough to improve their goal-tending?Fletcher went all-in this offseason to improve one of the worst defenses from last season. The Flyers goal-tending tandem of Carter Hart and Brian Elliott combined for the NHL's worst goals saved above average. Fletcher let Elliott walk in free agency and added Martin Jones to be the new understudy between the pipes. But the Flyers' success will ultimately hinge on whether the 23-year-old Hart will bounce back from a nightmarish 2020-2021 campaign. Philly traded for defensemen Ryan Ellis and Rasmus Ristolainen to try to make life easier for Hart. Fletcher also added Nate Thompson, Keith Yandle, Adam Clendening, and Derick Brassard in free agency. Vigneault & Co. believe the roster shakeup will help them make a viable playoff run. The Flyers will return to the Metropolitan Division after the league's altered alignments last season due to COVID-19. Vigneault's team will square off against the Vancouver Canucks in the season opener on Oct.15. Philly will kick off the regular season with a four-game homestand in front of fans for the first time since the mid-1970s. The Flyers will play seven of nine games on the road from Oct. 27 to Nov. 13, including a three-game swing to Western Canada (Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary) and Arizona, Pittsburgh, Washington, North Carolina, and Dallas. Vigneault's club will ring in the New Year with a four-game West Coast trip that includes their first visit to Climate Pledge Arena to face the Seattle Krakens (Dec. 29). The NHL will follow the All-Star Break in early February with a hiatus from Feb. 7 to 22 to accommodate players participating in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. However, the NHL and NHLPA reserve the right to prevent their players from taking part in the Winter Games if there are elevated COVID-19 or player safety concerns at the time. If NHL players don't participate in Beijing, the NHL will roll out an amended schedule for the remainder of the regular season. The Flyers will travel to Detroit after the Olympic break before a season-high six-game homestand at the Wells Fargo Center that features matchups with the Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, Edmonton Oilers, Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks, and Vegas Golden Knights. Philly will hit the road for a five-game slate in Detroit, St. Louis, Colorado, Nashville, and Minnesota from March 22 to 29.
