The Penguins will start the season without star centers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, who are both nursing injuries, with Jeff Carter expected to fill in as first-line center. Pittsburgh’s depth took a hit with the departures of Jared McCann and Brandon Tanev to the Seattle Kraken, with free-agents Danton Heinen and Brock McGinn brought in as their replacements. Jake Guentzel, Radim Zohorna, Evan Rodrigues, and Kasperi Kapanen represent the remainder of the top two lines. Young defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph is a breakout candidate. The biggest question mark is at goaltender, where Tristan Jarry struggled during last season's playoffs, while Casey DeSmith returns as his backup.

The Penguins have won five Stanley Cups. Led by Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, Pittsburgh won consecutive Stanley Cups in 1990-91 (over the Minnesota North Stars) and 1991-92 (defeating the Chicago Blackhawks). The Penguins’ third title came in 2008-09, defeating the Detroit Red Wings in seven games. Pittsburgh added back-to-back Cups in 2015-16 (downing the San Jose Sharks) and 2016-17 (topping the Nashville Predators).

The Penguins’ longest-standing rivalry is with the Philadelphia Flyers, with both teams entering the NHL in 1967. Pittsburgh also has rivalries with the Washington Capitals, whom they have met in the playoffs 11 times, and the New York Islanders.

Mike Sullivan is entering his seventh season as coach of the Penguins. In his first two seasons in Pittsburgh, Sullivan led the Penguins to back-to-back Stanley Cups in the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.
